What's it about?
About a hundred years before Game of Thrones, a huge, honest and not-very-rich knight called Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) heads to a tournament hoping to make his name. On the way he picks up a quick-witted young squire called Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), who is hiding a big secret. It's based on George R.R. Martin's "Dunk and Egg" novellas.
Why it works
- It's small on purpose. No world wars or throne-room scheming, just two underdogs trying to do the right thing.
- It's funny and warm. It feels different from every other show in the franchise.
- It's easy to fit in. Six short episodes make a perfect weekend binge.
- You don't need homework. No need to have watched Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon.
Smaller, warmer and funnier than the rest of the franchise, and all the better for it.
How big was it?
It became one of HBO Max's biggest series debuts ever, averaging close to 13 million US viewers per episode.

House of the Dragon (Season 3 coming this year), The Pitt, Shōgun.
